My first course in art therapy begins this weekend. I'm so happy! "Art therapy" hints a lot but simply drawing and expressing myself feels so profound, I had to explore this further.
Art was something I had abandoned pretty much after high school and it seemed to be slowly taking its toll on my spirit without my knowing.
Luckily, a very nice set of water color pencils, after an aura-soma class back in 2002 (!!), made its way into my closet. ;) Oh that was ten years ago. Yeeeeeaaaah, there was a reason for the 10 year blank. As much as water color pencils sounds creative and fun, to my own disappointment, it's still not my medium. There wasn't a way for me to control the way the colors blended with water and the change it made from dry to wet was beyond my imagination. It made me feel as helpless as I do on a crazy day at work. Meh. For a rainy day. Though, just staring at these beauties from time to time makes my heart skip. :)

The color pencil set was followed by another set of oils pastels in 2003. An art reading from a really bad Aura-Soma practitioner - oh seriously I had no idea what she was trying to say except hire me to interpret her seminar in NYC - pleaaase!, really repelled from ever getting advice from others again. She didn't do a reading that helped me, but she seemed to know art and the way she gracefully swished those pastels grabbed from her pastel box over the paper really caught my attention.
"That looks like so much fun," me thought. :D
That feeling stayed with me for a long time.

Many years later, this book opened up the world to what oil pastels can do. It revealed the path to the abandoned artist left back in high school. Writing, drawing, colors, and painting messy drawings without trying to judge anything right or wrong or good or bad but just letting it all flow made me see the point of "me" in the time and space of now, back then around 2006, without any filters, without trying to beautify anything.
After reading the book, I created this. This drawing inspired me to create more art with pastels. The blending and reblending of the colors with my fingers, coloring them over until it made the right shade and hue, then letting serendipity happen made me realize the art and I are bonded in some spiritual way. It was the "home" I was looking for. It called my spirit back to me. Spirit back then was a whisper. I barely noticed it communicating to me through my work.
It wasn't until another four years later in 2010 that I discovered an online creativity course via an article posted on with my favorite tarot card brand's facebook page. Taking an online fun course in creativity opened up a dam of energy inside me that was dying to play in the realm of colors and pastels. It played the trigger to a well of energy that was desiring to be expressed.
Not long after that, spirit called me to create my own art reading. It was my 3Xth birthday and I asked my guides to show me what my upcoming year would be like.
Yes, this was me affected by Shirley Maclaine's books on her connection with her guide. I read these books way back in high school, when I was still taking art class back then. It is inevitable that my life has taked this path to rediscovering spirit. When you connect with your energies at the time of your birthday, whatever you decide then will have a strong impact on the upcoming year.
This above represents what my year really was:
Strong bold strides and busy days as well as time for relaxation. There will be success and forward movement in a straightforward direction. It is time to act and not delay decision. Just keep moving on because you are on the right path.
This to me is not art therapy. I get messages from my art. I can access answers to my questions. I'm so excited to know what this process of art can mean, what can unfold, and what I will discover about life.
The class is held by the author of my first art therapy book. Her approach is very spiritual as well as practical and we seem to be heading in the same direction. Her book fell into my hands six years ago and we finally met last month. She is a teacher, healer and inspiration to me. I'm so looking forward to the journey.
*PS Just as I earlier mentioned my favorite tarot card brand, The Enchanted Tarot and Shirley MacLaine tonight, guess who appears on Facebook.
